Nominator’s Comments:
“”As President of the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Lunch Club, I am delighted to nominate Washburn School Principal, Andrew Bard. Andrew graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He started on his journey as a teacher in a small private school in Portland teaching technology and middle school mathematics. After three years in the private setting, he decided to come back to his hometown where he taught for the Lewiston School system. Throughout his teaching career, he participated in many district initiatives such as teacher evaluation – where he presented at the statewide superintendent & school board summit. In 2008, he earned his Master’s Degree in Literacy from the University of New England in Portland. As a lifelong learner, he continued to educate himself as he completed several certificates of advanced studies in educational leadership, ethics and change and special education inclusion. In 2012, he began his path as the Assistant Principal at Fairview School in Auburn. He worked closely with colleagues to understand technology, curriculum, and what effective teaching looks like through the work of Dr. Robert Marzano. Over the last fifteen years, Andrew has seen first-hand how the community can impact the children of the Twin Cities. This school year he embarked on a his new position as Principal of Washburn School. He has embraced this challenge of being a first year as a Principal with energy and passion. Andrew collaborated and partnered with our Lewiston/Auburn Rotary Club to help strengthen the bonds of community involvement and share the love of literacy. Together we have embarked on numerous projects benefiting his students and their families and other members of the community with his students participating.
To date, we have joined forces with fire prevention, food collections, adopt a family, hearts and flowers and shamrocks for seniors, and a Dr. Seuss event. Andrew was born, raised and resides in Lewiston. Principal Bard recently completed the Androscoggin Leadership Development Institute through the Chamber of Commerce. It is an absolute pleasure and honor to collaborate with Principal Bard. He is a dedicated, hard working young man and is a role model to his students.”
